India

In India, romance fraud—often referred to as online dating scams or cyber fraud—can be reported to multiple authorities, and some support services are available to help victims cope with the aftermath. Here’s how and where to report, and who you can reach out to for support:

Where to Report Romance Fraud in India

1. National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal

Website: cybercrime.gov.in
This is the central portal for reporting all forms of cybercrime in India, including romance scams.

  • Select the category “Report Other Cybercrime”
  • You can file a complaint with or without logging in
  • Upload screenshots, messages, account info, and any other evidence

You’ll also be directed to the appropriate local police jurisdiction after filing.

2. Police Cyber Cells (State Level)

Each Indian state has a Cyber Crime Cell—a special police division to investigate digital crimes.
To find the local unit:

  • Visit the state police website
  • Search for “Cyber Crime Cell” or “Cyber Police”
  • You can file FIRs in person or digitally, depending on the state

3. Call Helpline 1930 (formerly 155260)

This 24×7 helpline is part of India’s National Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (NCCC) for quick reporting of financial frauds, including romance-related scams.
Early reporting can help stop or reverse unauthorised financial transactions.

Tips When Reporting

  • Keep a copy of all chat logs, images, payment receipts, and social media handles
  • If your identity has been misused, alert the social media platform and file a police report
  • Avoid deleting communication threads—they can be valuable evidence

Key notes

  • Contact your bank as a priority
  • Report to law enforcement or cyber helplines
  • Get safe from further fraud

Re-victimisation is high with this fraud. Please get safe.

Remember, you’re not alone, and support is available to help you through this difficult time.
