Online only – overseas location

Online Romance Fraud -Financial (overseas location)

The most commonly recognised Romance Fraud is of that initiated and remaining online (from an overseas location) where money is exploited. Known in fraud by some as 419 scams (the section of legislation which covers online fraud in Nigeria), sadly the same fraud is practised in Ghana on an equally large scale and other West African countries such as Ivory Coast which are prominent in the arena. The typical practise of this fraud, is where photos are stolen and used as a character which creates a romantic connection with a victim online. These profiles are also known as Catfish profiles (you can read about this here). There is a specific type of story and process to this cyber crime which makes them recognisable when you know what you are looking for.
